Located approximately 10km west of San Pedro de Alcantara, Estepona is a Costa del Sol resort in name only. Closer to Gibraltar than Malaga, this charming town is perhaps the most Spanish of all those located along the coastline, maintaining its traditional architectural makeup and way of life, while slowly and steadily incorporating the attractions normally associated with Costa del Sol resorts.
The town’s two sweeping beaches boast EU Blue Flag status and are backed by wide promenades that boast some exceptional chiringuitos and seafood restaurants. At the one end of town sits the pretty port area, which is still a working fisherman’s port but also attracts tourists in their droves thanks to an abundance of bars and restaurants and the large market that is held there every Sunday.
In the centre of town, places of interest include the original bullring, the clock tower, the San Luis Castle and the church of Los Remedios, while most streets and squares abound in traditional Spanish architecture and exude a relaxed way of life. Not renowned for its nightlife, Estepona does, however, boast a large nightclub and some good late night bars. There are a number of luxurious hotels and housing developments on the edge of the town, making Estepona an up-and-coming destination for the jet-set.
