Antequera is a stunning medieval town that is located approximately 50km north of Malaga in the fertile GuadalhorceValley, an area which is blanketed by brilliant sunflowers in summer and produces large volumes of asparagus, olives and cereals. The town dates back to Moorish times and displays its heritage and history in many guises throughout town, from its Moorish Castle, its recently excavated Roman baths, it baroque bell towers and its Renaissance fountains.
Such a rich history and beautiful natural setting has been the breeding ground for a town that exudes a friendly and inviting atmosphere throughout. Some of the main attractions include the Santa Maria la Mayor Church, the dolmens – mass rock tombs located to the west of the town and dating back over 5,000 years – the Roman baths, the Moorish Castle and the 900 metre-high ‘La Pena de los Enamorados’, a giant and imposing crag of limestone that overlooks the town.
Today, Antequera attracts a fair amount of tourists that are keen to experience a slice of traditional Andalusian life. There are a number of good restaurants in town, plus the ubiquitous tapas and bodega bars too. Accommodation in and around town is of a high standard, and accessibility from Malaga airport is quick and easy.
