Hotels in Alora

Alora is a small whitewashed village that is located inland, approximately 40km from Malaga and 12km from the beautiful lakes and gorge of El Chorro. The village’s makeup is typical of Andalucia, in that sugar-cube buildings cling to steep hills, the surrounding valleys are backed by mountainous scenery and the centre of the village boasts pretty squares and quaint tapas bars.

Alora Castle, which overlooks the village, dates back to the 5th century and occupies a prominent position sat atop a steep mound overlooking the village and its surroundings. Additional buildings of interest include the church de la Encarnation, which dates back to the 17th century and is located on the site of a former mosque. Life in the village is a laidback affair which has remained largely unchanged for centuries; the village’s economy is dependent on the cultivation of citrus fruit and olives, the production of local crafts such as castanets and, latterly, tourism; Alora attracts its fair share of British and Scandinavian holidaymakers keen to sample a rural slice of Andalusian life.
